But in the middle of their second night, with their two children in bed, Amanda and her husband Clay-both of whom are white-hear a knock on the door. They've arrived from New York City at a bucolic home on the uncrowded outskirts of Long Island that they've rented for a little summer vacation. Even sunny days have a menace to them in Rumaan Alam's novel Leave the World Behind, though the family at the center of the story doesn’t realize it. ![]()
